This time you continue working on the port mandible. There’s a single frame section – an SF-09 – to add to the lower side of the port mandible, to join the three you added last time. After that there are a number of plant-on details to add to mandible side panels SP-23 and SP-24. Some of the details are really tiny so handle them carefully and try hard not to drop them as they can be hard to spot, especially if your work space is cluttered or the flooring below your work top is covered in thick carpet!

    Parts needed:
Side frame SF-09 (mandible) supplied with Issue 85
Two countersunk screws from those supplied with Issue 82
Side panel SP-23 (mandible) supplied with Issue 84
Side panel SP-24 (mandible) supplied with Issue 84
Sprue holding 14 plant-on details supplied with Issue 85

    Tools and other items needed
If you do everything that is described in the Stage 85 Assembly section of the magazine you will need the following:
Screwdriver supplied with Issue 2, or similar
    Side cutters or similar
    Craft knife
Needle file or fine sanding pads or sticks
    Cutting board
Cyanoacrylate instant glue, also known as superglue
    Cocktail sticks

    Adding the side frame
This should be both quick and easy. You’ve attached side frames before (most recently in Stage 84) and the single frame section you add this time to the rear of the inner side of the lower part of the port mandible should go on easily, providing you have it facing the right way so the screws are put through the countersunk screw holes.

    Detailing the side panels
You use 13 of the 14 details on the sprue supplied with the Issue 85 parts pack, sticking them onto side panels SP-23 and 24 that you received with Issue 84. As mentioned above a few of them (7), (8) and (9) are small, so watch how you cut, tidy and glue them.
You might find it easier to use a curved file to remove excess plastic from (3) and be careful when you remove (4) from the sprue not to remove part of the detail. One end of detail (6) rests in a U-shaped section of detail (5) and you might want to put a dab of glue there (as well as in the pin holes) to hold (6) securely in place. Press down (8) and (9) to get them lying flat relative to the surface they are stuck on to. A bit of glue on the back of (13) will help it adhere to the end of the side panel.

    Tidy up and store
Put the lower part of the port mandible somewhere safe and likewise keep the side panels, to which you have added details this time, somewhere where they will not get bashed about. Put the sprue with the remaining detail on back in the parts pack for Issue 85.
