This time you work on both the upper and the lower sections of the port mandible. You glue five plant-on details, including four sections of pipework, to the upper side, which you last worked on in Stage 83, and you attach three side frames – two SF-08s and a single SF-09 –to the long outer edge of the lower mandible, which you last worked on in Stage 82. Remember to handle these mandible sections gently, taking particular care with the surfaces that have long, thin plant-on details.
Sprue holding five plant-on details supplied with Issue 84
Side frame SF-08 (mandible) x 2 supplied with Issue 84
Side frame SF-09 (mandible) supplied with Issue 84
Six countersunk screws from those supplied with Issue 82
Tools and other items needed
If you do everything that is described in the Stage 84 Assembly section of the magazine you will need the following:
Side cutters or similar
Needle file or fine sanding pads or sticks
Cyanoacrylate instant glue, also known as superglue
Screwdriver supplied with Issue 2, or similar
Adding plant-on details
Watch out that you make the cuts from the sprue in the correct place, especially with the long thin details you are working with this time. And take it easy when you tidy up the excess plastic left behind at the points where the details attach to the sprue. Details (1), (2) and (3) have sprue joins approximately in their middles and these need delicate sanding or filing to neaten them up prior to gluing down.
The narrow end of (1) is located at the centre of the plating and a dab of glue in the centre of the groove it sits in will help secure it in position, as well as the glue where its pins enter the plating. When you test fit (3) you’ll see that it only fits properly one way round, with the end where the pin is closer to the end of the pipe at the front of the mandible. The end of (5) that goes into the recess fits into a hole that you can see on the base of the mandible.
Adding the side frames
The last time you fitted side frames was in Stage 78, when you attached them to the starboard mandible assembly and like then the assembly in this stage is not difficult. The brass-coloured countersunk fixing screws that you use this time were supplied with Issue 82. Remember to make sure the screws go into the frames from the side that is countersunk.
Tidy up and store
Put the upper and lower sections of the port mandible away somewhere safe and store the side panels SP-24 and SP-23 supplied with the stage but not used this time back in the parts pack for Issue 84 so you know where to find them when you need them later.
